From the day we first poked our stubby man-fingers at a map of the world, optimistically tracing a line across the huge landmass of Europe and Asia, it became obvious that we were in for a trip of extremes. Large areas of yellowish-brown, deceptively innocent bodies of blue and understated triangular peaks dotted the path we'd sketched along the map, reflective of the dizzying mountain peaks, arid deserts, bustling cities and desolate wastelands that we will encounter. Less obvious from a cursory glance at a map, but just as exciting, are the wealth of cultures, religions and ethnicities we'll experience as we travel from East to West through some of the world's greatest empires of ancient times.

After skirting the Chinese border and exploring Siberia, we'll drop down into Mongolia and tackle the Gobi desert, before exploring the highs and lows of the Central Asian republics. From there it's a quick hop across the Caspian Sea to one of the world's more troubled areas - the Caucasus. From the Azerbaijani port of Baku, we'll head North West to Georgia (foreign affairs permitting) and then onwards into Turkey. We hope to be enjoying the sights and sounds of the Mediterranean by some stage in August, before finally hanging up our helmets in London, England.
