Gear Lists

Riding the 25,000 kilometres involved in this trip is going to be a big undertaking.

Every piece of equipment on the journey must be carried the distance. Every piece must be vital to the success of the trip, light, and stowable. The hard roads, the bogs, and river crossings will be a test on the frame of any bike. We have have had to be brutal with our selection of gear. Leave the snuggle blanket at home, blokes - swap it for an extra spanner.

Compiling a gear list for the 51st Traverse has been somewhat of a scientific process. Each piece of gear can be divided into two categories: it relates either to the Crew or to the Bikes. Clearly, items tools and spare rims and tubes are relate to the bike, and cookers, tents and toothbrushes relate to the crew. So it should be easy to write two lists on this basis then right? Not entirely.

We have discovered that both of these categories can be broken down further again, into "required" and the elusive category of "possibly required". The equipment in this last "possibly required" category is the hardest to plan.

This category is the one that will keep you awake at night as you decide you need it, then later decide you don't. These are the items that people will tell you with the best of intentions that you MUST take, but also the ones that you simply have to make your own decision on, as you risk overloading your bike and tempt disaster. A spare rim between two bikes is a must - the chances are it will be needed. But what about a second rim? Should we have two rims over three bikes perhaps? We must have a first aid kit, but how comprehensive? We have a have a robust, light and multi-fuel cooker; but it is not good if a jet or a hose breaks - do we take spares of those too? Where do we stop?
